Beyond the Chair

Reclaiming Passion and Purpose After Spinal Trauma

Beyond the Chair is more than a story about injury—it’s a story about identity, resilience, and rediscovering purpose when life places an unexpected obstacle in your path.

After living with cerebral palsy and epilepsy since birth—and later experiencing a life-altering spinal cord injury—I wasn’t stripped of everything I knew. Instead, it felt as though a massive boulder had been dropped directly in my way. The road forward was still there, but it would never look the same.

Having already navigated life with a mildly debilitating disability, I was deeply grateful for the way God had designed me. That lived experience gave me resilience, perspective, and a foundation to draw from—but my injury required something new: a redefining of the path itself. I had to learn how to adapt, rebuild, and move forward with intention rather than momentum.

This book shares my personal journey through loss, rehabilitation, faith, and rebuilding—offering honest reflections on grief, frustration, hope, and the slow, often unseen work of learning to rise again. Through lived experience, practical insight, and encouragement, Beyond the Chair speaks to anyone navigating spinal trauma, neurological injury, or a season of profound life disruption.

Whether you’re living with a spinal cord injury, supporting someone who is, or walking through recovery after trauma or illness, this book is a reminder that your story isn’t over—and your purpose isn’t confined to a chair, a diagnosis, or an obstacle in your way.

This is a story of rising—not just surviving.

Speaking & Advocacy

A growing voice rooted in lived experience and guided by purpose.

Copyright by Abe Bilodeau
Speaking and advocacy are not just future goals for Abe Bilodeau—they are a calling shaped by lived experience, deep reflection, and a desire to create understanding, hope, and change.

While Abe is in the early stages of formal speaking, the topics he hopes to address are ones he has lived, wrestled with, and continues to walk through every day. His journey with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and a spinal cord injury has required redefining identity, purpose, and possibility—lessons he feels called to share as opportunities arise.

Abe is currently developing speaking opportunities with:

  • Individuals and families navigating spinal trauma or neurological conditions
  • Educators seeking resilience, perspective, and renewed purpose
  • Faith-based groups exploring perseverance, identity, and hope
  • Community organizations and support groups

Advocacy in Action

Advocacy is where Abe’s voice has already begun to take shape.

He has served as a board member with the United Spinal Association at the local Tennessee level, and has participated in advocacy efforts at the national level, including attending United Spinal Association’s Roll on Capitol Hill event in Washington, D.C.

Through these experiences, Abe has engaged in conversations around:

  • Accessible transportation
  • Medicaid and healthcare access
  • Wheelchair repair reform
  • Disability rights, access, and community inclusion

His advocacy is grounded in lived experience and a growing commitment to helping shape systems that better serve individuals with disabilities.

Topics Abe Is Passionate About Speaking On:

  • Life After Spinal Trauma: Redefining the Path Forward
  • Beyond the Chair: Identity, Purpose, and Possibility
  • Resilience and Perspective in Education
  • Faith, Perseverance, and Hope Through Adversity
  • Advocacy Through Experience: Learning to Use Your Voice

While his speaking journey is just beginning, Abe approaches every opportunity with humility, authenticity, and a belief that meaningful conversations—no matter how small—can lead to lasting change.
